I’m kinda nervous about the hills in Dorset as I know they are probably a lot meaner than the ones I have been training on in Surrey but with the right amount of cross training and core strength I don’t see why I can’t do them.

Today’s run had its own heartbeat. I often like to think of running as dancing with the trail, following its lead. Today’s partner was very romantic, in the woods there were bluebells and lilly of the valley so the whole forest smelt bitter and sweet at the same time. I saw a fox cub charging through a field of dandylions and there were buzzards calling in over the heathland. It was hot today and I ran without a shirt, got stung by a bee and scratched by gorse.

At about mile 21 I was in a considerable amount of pain. I was completing a loop at the end of the run and the psycological effects of being nearly home but turning round and doing another loop are actually really painful. So there I was, grimacing in the road when the most incredible thing happened. I was listening to Mars, Brinnger of War by Holst when all of a sudden I snapped out of all pain and flew all the way home.

theoceanrolls:

This photo reminded me of a little something I just learned about called earthing. This morning I went out to my backyard with my two dogs, a cup of organic detox tea in hand, and earthed! Ancient healers believed Earth’s energy could be easily absorbed through our skin and through the soles of our feet. Studies proves earthing (also called grounding) can improve your blood pressure, reduce cortisol, and even help problems sleeping. It’s done by reconnecting your body with the free electrons that flow through the Earth’s surface and it’s as easy as walking barefoot outdoors.

I was expecting to be really sore because I was still aching from saturday but actually, running sorted out those aches and pains for me. Love it when that happens.

The woods were beautiful, winter was so long that to see leaves on the trees is a bit of a shock. There were so many birds in the canopy and bluebells on the forest floor, I didn’t see another human for the entire run which is rare for round here and when I was less than a mile from home it began to pour with rain.

Back at home i did an hour of strength training and half of stretching. Made myself some healthy eats and then went foraging for fresh nettles.

Today was a good day.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's nettle recipes

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's nettle recipes:
free food?

First Fires — Bonobo, Grey Reverend

First Fires — Bonobo, Grey Reverend

So long as there are book to read and trails to run I am happy.

So long as there are book to read and trails to run I am happy.

barefoot-traveller:

On Saturday I went to a special event hosted by London’s School Of Life on Wimbeldon Common. The event was about running and philosophy and it was lead by author Mark Rowlands.

I began the day by running with Alex to Putney bridge (only 2 miles away from Hammersmith) then caught the bus to Wimbeldon common, It was a beautiful day in London, It’s a lovely city in the summer because there are loads of green spaces and people are genuinly delighted to see the sun.

The first session of the day was a warm up with Chris from the Chiswick running school, at first i felt kinda awkward doing lunges right outside the tea rooms but that soon wore off as heartrates increased. There were only about 16 people doing the course and I was deffinatly the youngest.

We spent the morning learning the secrets of running techiques and doing some strength training interspersed with stability stretches. There was a gap in between the end of the session and lunch so i went with a few of the other people for a little run to kill time.

It was great because, although we were all strangers to begin with, running is one of those things that has the power to unite people from all walks of life which is something quite remarkable given that a lot of the time it is a very solitary sport.

Lunch was an organic picnic in the local rugby club house (as it began to rain in the afternoon) then two talks, one on sound and the other by Mark on his new book which i am reading at the moment.

At about 5pm we all went out for another run, this time a bit longer, round the common. It was really great running with like-minded people because usually when i talk about running with other artists they say something along the lines of ‘you’re mad’ and if i talk about my art with other runners they are like ‘you’re weird.’ so it was great to be able to talk to people who matched me in both weirdness and madness.

It was such a great day and it has given me loads more inspiration to combine my running and my art practice in the near future.

In the evening i got the bus back to putney then ran back to Hammersmith and had a Thai Curry. I reckon all in all I ran about 14 miles, perhaps more but i am aching worse than if i had ran 20! Must be from the technique drills.

For now though I’m making granola in my pj’s and listening to Mountain Man, life is good.

6.5.2013

I’ve been overdoing it a bit recently, too many late nights, stressing over uni work (hand it all in tomorrow!) and my clean eating has gone out the window. I’ve really missed the comfort of a training routine over the last two weeks and I can’t wait to get back into it! I ran 7 miles today and it was so easy, i think it might be one off my favorite distances. It was hot today and I have really awkward tan lines already, but I think I run best in hot weather. Tomorrow it will be even hotter and I can’t wait to be free to run all day…

woodsounds:
